Slideways V8 Ute driver Cam Wilson kicks off 2015 racing season with Peters Motorsports
GOLD Coast V8 Ute driver Cam Wilson has announced he has joined Queensland team, Peters Motorsports, as the 2015 racing season begins this week with Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
The move reunites Wilson with Peters Motorsports’ team owner Rod Dawson and mechanic Peter Phillips who led Wilson to victory at the hotly contested Queensland Gemini Series in 2000. In 2000, Dawson was a supplier while Phillips was Wilson’s main mechanic.
After a dissatisfying 2014 season, Wilson decided in December he was not going to race again, that was until he was presented an opportunity he could not refuse.
“The opportunity presented itself with Peters Motorsports, introduced through my brother Benn (Wilson) to be reunited with Peter Phillips and to work with Rod Dawson,” Wilson said.
“It’s funny how things come about. The next minute I was at Queensland Raceway for a test drive and I was achieving lap times to the standard of Peters Motorsports’ front running drivers. The team was pretty impressed with me and I was impressed with them.”
Wilson joins the team with his good friend and fellow V8 Ute driver Peter Burnitt, building the team’s driver line up to five Queenslanders.
“I’m very happy with this outcome which means I’ll be back on the track this year, and with my good friend Peter (Burnitt) joining me, it is set to be a very exciting year for all of us.”
Brett Peters from Peters Motorsports said he looked forward to Cam bringing his experience to the team.
“It’s great to have Cam racing with us and not against us! With Cam and Peter (Burnitt) joining the team, we’re really becoming a ‘super team’ of five excellent Queensland drivers,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to sticking it to the southern-based teams and stamping our authority in the V8s this year.
“We are the V8 Ute Championship winning team and believe we have what it takes to be out in front this year and Cam will be an integral part of that. We know he’s a great, fast driver, so we’re expecting big things from him this year utilising our equipment.”
Peters said Wilson’s business interests complemented his driving, adding further value to his involvement with Peters Motorsports.
“There are a number of synergies with Cam’s business, Slideways Go Karting Australia which is growing rapidly and it’s a great opportunity for this business to be involved with our sponsors,” he said.
Wilson said he was excited to have joined the team in time for Clipsal 500 Adelaide beginning this Thursday and running until Sunday.
“It’s my favourite all time event – I love the track. Last year I was getting some super fast times in the qualifying rounds,” Wilson said.
“We’re ready this year with a ‘brand spanking’ new ute to signify the start of the 2015 season. I’m determined to get a top 10 finish.”
Wilson’s Ford Falcon will sport a logo from sponsor, The Variety Group and Slideways Go Karting Australia.
